Baking In The July Haze (2026)

Baking in the July haze, the heat dome over Shenandoah was relentless. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't escape it. But superstition and a well-planned itinerary kept me going. I started my hike early, sticking to the downhill trail and enjoying the views from The Pinnacle and the Panorama parking area. After a break and a moment of inspiration, I decided to replicate my heroic hike from the previous Friday, swapping between the AT and Skyline Drive for the fastest route back to my van.

However, the heat took its toll. I was cooking not just miles but also my entire body. I questioned how far I could go, and had to make a decision between a shorter but steeper route over Compton Peak and staying on Skyline Drive. I chose the former, and was rewarded with a generous water break. I then continued on the AT, battling insects and the heat, until I reached the creek before 7:00 PM. Despite the fatigue, I pitched my tent and laid down to cool off, hoping for some relief from the humidity.

In my opinion, the heat dome over Shenandoah is a testament to the resilience of hikers like me. We push ourselves to the limit, battling the elements and our own physical limitations. But it's the superstitions, the well-planned itineraries, and the moments of inspiration that keep us going. And sometimes, it's the kindness of strangers that provides the necessary boost to keep us on track. As I lay in my tent, I reflected on the day's events, grateful for the views, the challenges, and the unexpected help along the way.
